Food Manufacturing R&D Technologist – DurbanIntroductionOur client is seeking an R&D Technologist. This role will be responsible for the development and improvement of food products (related to fats and oils) and processes within the manufacturing environment. The successful candidate will work closely with the sales, marketing, production, quality, and purchasing teams to drive innovation, optimize formulations, and ensure compliance with food safety and regulatory standards. Experience in food manufacturing is essential, and knowledge of fats and oils is a significant advantage.Functions and ResponsibilitiesProduct Development and InnovationLead product innovation projects from conceptual design to factory implementation, in accordance with company strategy and client requirements. Reformulate existing products to improve quality, profitability, or nutritional value. Conduct laboratory and factory-scale trials to validate formulations and processes. Support product improvements related to sensory appeal, stability, and shelf life. Recruit new raw material and packaging suppliers. 🌻Technical Support and Process OptimizationWork collaboratively with production and quality teams to resolve process or formulation issues. Efficiently transform laboratory-scale formulations into large-scale manufacturing. Develop and maintain product specifications, formulations, and SOPs. Participate in continuous improvement projects focused on process efficiency and sustainability. Visit customers and conduct sensory evaluations. Meet customer specifications.Documentation and ComplianceEnsure all R&D activities comply with food safety, quality, and regulatory standards (e.g., FSSC 22000, HACCP, Codex). Maintain accurate and up-to-date technical documentation, including test reports, formulations, and change control records. Coordinate with suppliers and regulatory bodies to obtain and approve raw materials and ingredients. 🌻Market Research and Analysis: Conduct ingredient functionality studies, competitive benchmarking, and trend analysis. Identify innovative technologies and ingredients to enhance the product portfolio.
