JOB SUMMARY

The Hospital Academic Staff (HBAS) is responsible for facilitating the teaching and learning of theoretical and clinical components in a clinical nursing setting to reinforce the learning process and integrate theory and practice. They will also provide current nursing education, assessment, and support to students in the hospital ward clinical environment. The incumbent is also responsible for establishing partnerships between the hospital’s clinical teams and Netcare’s Education teams to ensure the development and continuous improvement of theoretical and clinical nursing skills, nursing standards, and overall nursing care.

KEY RESULTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

CONSISTENCY OF CARE

Research Activities

Actively participate in research activities to discover new knowledge about products, processes, and services, and then apply that knowledge to create new and improved products, processes, and services that meet the needs of the academic market.

Plan, organize, and actively participate in the process and production of all academic projects.

Develop and review assessment and education strategies.

Motivate and encourage students to participate in research within their scope of practice.

Audit and participate in quality improvement programs to identify issues that may require further investigation.

Accreditation Activities

Implement and maintain the healthcare practice standards required by all accredited bodies and relevant healthcare legislation.

Administration

Develop work-integrated learning (WIL) practice schedules for students.

Monitor and manage student performance, hours, and absences.

Facilitate the grading of case studies and assignments according to Netcare Education requirements.

Record all clinical assessment results and ensure that student clinical records are kept up-to-date in the Learning Management System (LMS).

Academic Committee Projects

Plan, organize, and ensure active participation in academic processes and the production of all academic projects in collaboration with Netcare Education.

Facilitating Teaching and Learning

Facilitate integrated learning within the work of Netcare students in the context of the clinical model, understanding, applying, and maintaining adult learning methodologies, presentation techniques, and course content to ensure that students acquire skills at the required quality and level, in accordance with student and national qualification requirements. Provide timely assessment of student progress through the application of evaluation techniques.

Plan and support the development of students’ knowledge, skills, and abilities, closely monitoring their progress on assignments and exams against performance objectives to identify talents. Provide timely guidance and feedback to strengthen skill areas and enhance potential.

Focus on quality in all academic and clinical nursing processes.

Understand, apply, and leverage IT and technology systems, tools, and/or equipment to facilitate and reinforce the learning process.

To communicate information and ideas clearly through diverse educational strategies that engage students and help them understand and retain the message.

To provide remedial instruction and academic support to students.

To develop and manage a student support system.

To monitor student progress toward achieving learning objectives.

To prepare clinical progress reports for each student.

To provide clinical mentoring to all Netcare students and nurses in departments or units to ensure that evidence-based practices are reinforced in direct patient care.

To conduct academic rounds.

Quality and risk management.

To maintain a clean, safe, and therapeutic environment, free from medico-legal risks.

To comply with Netcare’s resuscitation policy.

To comply with Netcare’s medical waste management principles and all other waste management principles.

Maintain a safe work environment in accordance with the Workplace Safety and Machinery Act.

Report and act upon identified potential or actual hazards.

Responsible for ensuring the proper use, cleaning, and storage of equipment.

Report any equipment requiring repair or replacement.

Maintain professional conduct and standards at all times, in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.

Maintain patient and student confidentiality at all times.

Perform quality assurance and risk management activities.

Ensure awareness of conditions that affect the safety of employees and students.

Focus on the development of academic and clinical nursing processes to ensure a quality-oriented approach.

Effectively manage all academic activities to ensure compliance with current policies and legislation.

Comply with all relevant legal requirements and standards.

Ensure compliance with Netcare Education’s strategy and quality management systems by completing the balanced scorecards annually.

Ensure your hospital is prepared for any type of clinical validation at any time.

SKILLS PROFILE

EDUCATION
Essential Requirements

Proof of current registration with the South African Council of Nurses (SANC) as a Registered Nurse and Midwife, with an additional qualification in Nursing Education. This registration must be maintained.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Additional qualifications in related specialties, required for the specific HBAS position.

Minimum of 3 years of experience in an academic setting.

Completed and registered SANC evaluator certification, delivered through Heart Solutions according to Netcare Education policy.

Successful completion of moderator training and registration with SANC is required within the first year of employment.

A master’s degree in a clinical specialty or education is a plus.

A commitment to begin a master’s degree within two years of starting employment with Netcare and to complete the degree within the established academic timeframe is required.

Own vehicle and driver’s license required.

WORK EXPERIENCE
Preferred

Experience in facilitation skills within a clinical/academic nursing setting.

Research skills.

Intermediate proficiency in the following Microsoft Office programs: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, database search, email, internet, and digital learning platforms.

KNOWLEDGE
Essential

Strong understanding and application of legislation and other external factors affecting general and nursing education. Knowledge of stakeholder relationship management.

Knowledge of educational and business management principles.

Knowledge of the legislative and business environment related to general and nursing education.

Preferred

Knowledge of public-private partnerships.
