The Nursing Assistant is responsible for the direct and/or indirect nursing care of a patient or group of patients and will work under the direct and/or indirect supervision of the Registered Nurse.
The incumbent is responsible for their own actions and omissions.
Nursing activities are part of a nursing care plan initiated by the Registered Nurse. The nursing assistant is responsible for assessing, caring for, and meeting the patient’s needs, as well as developing, implementing, and evaluating appropriate care programs to ensure high-quality care.
Job Summary:

Nursing activities are part of a planned nursing regimen initiated by the Registered Nurse. The nursing assistant is responsible for assessing, caring for, and meeting the patient’s needs, as well as developing, implementing, and evaluating appropriate care programs to ensure high-quality care.
KEY RESULTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
CONSISTENCY OF CARE
Administrative Management
- Ensure all documentation is kept up-to-date and accurate, reflecting patient care.
- Ensure all inventory is properly recorded.
- Assist in compiling patient records.
Governance, Quality, and Risk Management
- Maintain a clean, safe, and therapeutic environment, free from medico-legal risks.
- Comply with Netcare’s medical waste management principles and all other waste management principles.
- Maintain a safe working environment in accordance with the Safety at Work and Machinery Act.
- Report any identified potential or actual hazards.
- Ensure proper inventory control.
- Responsible for ensuring the correct use, cleaning, and storage of equipment.
- Inform the responsible nurse about any equipment requiring repair or replacement. • Maintain professional conduct and standards at all times, in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- Supervise nursing assistants.
Patient Care
- Provide patient care within your scope of practice and assume full responsibility for these activities.
- Contribute to comprehensive patient care.
- Participate in the ward/unit quality improvement program.
- Assist with the shift handover.
- Communicate effectively with patients regarding their care.
- Promote the patient’s overall health and well-being.
- Apply infection prevention principles and all standard precautions.
- Promote and maintain positive interpersonal relationships with patients, families, and visitors.
- Perform all procedures in accordance with hospital standards.
- Refer all patient and physician complaints to the unit’s lead nurse. • Perform all departmental tasks assigned by supervisors.

Registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Registered Nurse Assistant or equivalent NQF 3 qualification.
Compliance with the SANC Code for Registered Nurse Assistants and all applicable healthcare legislation.
Emergency Department experience (essential).
